Kaymakli Underground City in Cappadocia

The Kaymakli Underground City, nestled in the captivating Cappadocia region, stands as a renowned and mesmerizing destination, drawing approximately one million visitors annually. It proudly holds the title of the largest underground city among the 34 such cities in the area, making it an absolute must-see attraction. Built by Early Christians during the tumultuous times of Roman persecution, this subterranean marvel served as a sanctuary, offering protection to its inhabitants against the relentless oppression.

Origins and Purpose

In the early years of Christianity, Roman soldiers ruthlessly persecuted non-Pagan believers, leading the Christians in Cappadocia to seek refuge underground. Realizing the practical advantages of living below the surface, they ingeniously crafted the Kaymakli Underground City. This vast and intricate maze of tunnels and caves provided safety for the residents, shielding them from the soldiers’ relentless pursuit and attacks on their villages.

The Marvel of Kaymakli Underground City

Kaymakli Underground City, while structurally similar to other underground cities, boasts an awe-inspiring feature in its well-organized and thought-out design. Within its depths lie an array of amenities, ranging from living rooms and sleeping quarters to stables, kitchens, storage sections, churches, and even graveyards.

UNESCO World Heritage Site

Recognizing its historical significance and architectural brilliance, Kaymakli Underground City earned a coveted spot on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985. Since 1964, it has been open to visitors who can explore levels 1 to 4 of this fascinating underground realm. The ingenious ventilation system ensures every room receives equal access to oxygen, thanks to carefully placed air shafts on each level, encompassing a total of 18 separate vents that provide fresh air for this 60-meter-deep cave city.
